Things to avoid while getting a divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 11, 2016 | Uncategorized

Going through a divorce can be one of the most stressful times you’ll ever experience in life. You are starting a whole new life away from a person you once loved. Your assets are being divided and a court might be deciding your future with your children. That overwhelming stress can often lead to some irrational behaviors that could end up damaging your case. So, with that in mind, let’s first look at some of things you should avoid during the process:

  • You might want to start making plans concerning a new job or a big move out of the state, but hold off until the divorce is over.
  • Don’t try to hide assets from your spouse by giving them away or moving money; if it’s discovered, you could end up back in court.
  • Don’t act out against your soon-to-be-ex. Resorting to violence or other schemes to “get back” at them is only going to land you in hot water.
  • Under no circumstances should you violate a visitation or temporary custody agreement. You’ll only endanger your future chances of getting the results you want.
  • Don’t turn your children against your ex. Doing so can cause irrevocable damage and, regardless of your feeling for him or her, your children need them in their lives.

Lastly, don’t try to negotiate or take your ex to court alone. The process of divorce is complicated and having an attorney by your side throughout the process can help you be treated fairly when it comes to property division, child support and child custody.
