Maintaining custody obligations during holidays helps everyone

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2015 | Uncategorized

As the holidays approach, many Houstonians are likely making big plans. For parents, this is a special time to be with their children. However, for parents who do not live under the same roof, the holidays can provide extra challenges. When children split time between parents who are divorced or otherwise not together, it is very important that all parties are on the same page when it comes to holiday arrangements.

Everyone can benefit when parents work together in managing their children’s time. Both custodial and non-custodial parents have their share of holiday stresses. A custodial parent can become overwhelmed by all the added responsibilities the holidays bring.

On the other hand, for non-custodial parents, the holidays can be very lonely if they are unable to spend time with their children. However, if parents are able to coordinate things in such a way that they share their children’s time, then the custodial parent may be able to get some rest while the non-custodial parent does not have to be alone.

Most importantly, it is usually in the children’s best interests to spend time with each parent during the holidays. Children have every reason to want to be with both of their parents during this time of the year and should be able to do so.

Often custody agreements include terms regarding visitation during the holidays. Both parents should adhere to these terms unless they mutually agree to do otherwise. Sometimes a parent will not live up to his or her custody obligations by either blocking visitation or not showing up to pick up the children.
