More older couples filing for divorce

Divorce during any time of life can create new financial challenges. What was once a couple working together to maintain a household becomes two individuals adjusting to a new set of circumstances. But as we know, it can be easier for younger people to make the necessary adjustments than those who are pushing toward retirement age.

What is the purpose of alimony?

When you choose to dedicate your life to a partnership with someone else, your hope is that the relationship will remain intact for the duration. Unfortunately, the circumstances of a marriage can change through time. Sometimes emotional distance develops gradually, due to a slow drifting apart. Other times a serious rift can occur because of some unforeseeable event or unforgivable trespass.

A common law marriage can end in a traditional divorce

There are some couples who, while not wanting a marriage license or a wedding ceremony, would still like to have some kind of recognition of their dedication to one another. One way an unmarried couple can do this is by enacting what is referred to as a "common law marriage."
